The Latest Superfood

The Latest Superfood

The latest findings in the Superfood stakes.  This sounds good and I hope it will become widely available!

  • In one study, mice on a high-fat diet were given red cabbage sprouts, which helped optimize their cholesterol levels better than the control group
  • The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) did a similar study on 25 different commercially available sprouts, finding that in comparison with the mature version, they were nutritionally far superior
  • When you eat just about any vegetable, from sweet potatoes to radishes to Brussels sprouts, their microgreen counterparts will net higher nutritional advantages, pretty much across the board
  • Purchasing sprouts can cost as much as $30 per pound, but growing your own is an easy way to remedy that

Documentary Investigates Family Farming Practices Around the World

Family Farming Practices

This documentary is encouraging when you consider how much of our food is mass produced.  More and more people are seeking out organic foods and often grow their own.  Home grown food just tastes better and we are secure knowing the exact fertilizers that are being used.

  •  Eighty percent of the world’s food supply still comes from small family operated farms. These farms also employ about 40 percent of the global workforce
  • As custodians of a majority of the global agricultural resources, family farms are essential players in efforts to strengthen food security and improve the global ecology
  • To investigate the diversity, challenges and benefits of family farming around the world, a group of agronomists visit farmers in India, France, Ecuador, Cameroon and Canada

Tips For A Healthy New Year

Healthy Eating Choices For 2016

Christmas is a time for indulgence for many but also a time for reflection of what we want to change in the new year.  Since being healthy is the most important aspect of our life, why not consider a more healthy approach to consumerism.  Here are a few tips on how to eat organic, cooking your own food and where possible even grow your own food.  Shopping wisely need not be expensive, it is about knowing what you want to eat and shopping accordingly rather than being guided by what you see in the shop.

  • Cook your own meals at home, ideally from scratch (including growing as much of your own food as possible)
  • Upgrade your baking by swapping out coconut flour for wheat flour, butter for margarine, pureed fruits and veggies for sugar, and coconut oil for vegetable oil
  • Choose meat that’s pastured (grass-fed) and organic; avoid processed meats
