Popular Heartburn Medication Could Trigger Heart Attack

Heartburn is one of those conditions that if not taken seriously can indeed lead to a heart attack.  Some years ago a friend told me that her friend suffered from heartburn symptoms and went to the doctor.  He prescribed Gaviscon.  This friend died suddenly a few days later from a heart attack.  This shows that heartburn needs to be taken seriously and treated properly.  Often is is connected to lifestyle.

Heartburn Medication To Avoid
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid, are severely overprescribed and misused for heartburn—a condition for which they were not designed
  • PPIs have been linked to an increased risk for heart attack, even if you have no prior history of cardiovascular disease
  • Other side effects of PPI drugs include pneumonia, bone loss, hip fractures, and Clostridium difficile infection (a harmful intestinal bacteria)
