I was drawn to an article in the Saturday Telegraph, entitled ‘Spotlight on Business’, which features the most inspiring and innovative new businesses in Britain.
This article features Janan Leo, who after browsing through her collection of high healed shoes to wear to go to work, had a sudden inspiration. She had found it difficult to negotiate a busy life in London and wear high heals to look fashionable. Her idea was to design foldable Ballet Pumps that would fit neatly into a handbag thus ending the uncomfortable days of negotiating London Streets on a daily basis on the way to work.
High heels look great and complement good outfits but are often downright uncomfortable, not to mention the harm they do to women’s feet.
Anyway, back to Janan’s story. She kept her day job but researched her market for these foldable Ballet Pumps and also enrolled in a course in Shoe Design at College. Soon the shoes were on the production line and out on the shop floor.
Women loved these shoes that are so comfortable and so easy to carry around and to wear on the way to work and then be stashed in the handbag until it’s time to leave work again. Demand soon overtook supply and a new business was born.
